Queen Latifah

March 18th, 1970 -

by – G. K. Holland

"We all wanted the Benzes, BMWs, to wear the Guccis and Louis Vuitton.

Rap was how we wanted to make our money instead of being drug dealers."-- Queen Latifah

“Fresh & delicate From the Beginning"

Queen Latifah, was born Dana Owens in Newark, New Jersey. So profound and obvious was her special presence and energy that as early as the age of eight she  was nicknamed "Latifah" (in Arabic the name means "delicate" and "sensitive"). From the very beginning Latifah was found to be quite the intellectually gifted, fresh as some might say. She attended Saint Anne's parochial school, where she performed the character Dorothy in The Wiz,  a school production. In high school, the popular Latifah played power forward on the school's basketball team. During her sophomore year in high school, she began rapping with two friends in an all-women's group called ‘Ladies Fresh’.

Rita Owens (her very loving and supportive mother) would set a solid example of a hard working independent woman for the Queen to follow years later. She witnessed her mother’s family dedication and consistent work while they lived in a humble tenement in Newark Jersey.

The Wrath of Her Madness

In 1998, after being encouraged by her mother, Queen Latifah began to make demo tapes featuring her rap talent. As fate would have it, this demo tape would be instrumental in launching her career at Tommy Boy Records. Every Queen has her wrath, her rage, her passion, her madness. Queen Latifah’s music/rap career began earnestly in 1989 as she toured parts of Europe, and appeared at the legendary Apollo theater in Harlem New York. The release of her first album ‘All Hail the Queen’ garnered her a lot of critical acclaim as well as spawning two single subjects (singles) who would prove loyal to the Queen. These were her two hit singles “ Wrath of My Madness” and “Dance For Me”.

Another single called “Ladies First”, embraced black women’s contributions to the struggle for black liberation not only in the U.S., but also in Africa, and all around the world. Incredibly, this song was also named by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll!

Latifah’s greatest exposure to the world seems to have come from the TV sitcom called Living Single. In this show she portrays the character named Khadijha James. Khadijah is one of four professional Black women trying to make it successfully in New York City. The remaining three female characters were portrayed by actresses Kim Fields, Kim Cole and Erika Alexander. Khadijah is the owner of the fictional magazine called Flavor. Flavor  is actually Queen Latifah’s current Flavor Unit Records and Management were named after this fictional magazine from the TV show. Between 1989 and 1992 she would experience a plethora of successes (appearing in a number of memorable movie roles) and tragedy (her brother died on a motor cycle accident in 1992). Yet with all the courage and grace of a true Queen she persevered on.

As the years go by, the Queen would go on to do more noticeable film roles. She would also produce and guest-stars on a number of musical endeavors, establishes and managed Flavor Unit artists, and continues to work for worthy causes, including the ever important anti-drug campaigns.

A Queen & Her Court

As an African American rap artist, actress, entertainment executive, fighter of worthy causes, an entrepreneur and a film producer, Queen Latifah is now branching out with a team of people who represent the much sought after ‘sellable Brand name’, which is Queen Latifah herself. With an impressive list of awards behind her (a Grammy, the Aretha Franklin Award for Entertainer of the Year at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and others), she has launched Unit Flavor Films. She has a team of committed workers her believe in her mission and share her dream.

Her image is one of beauty and class. Her presence and continued upward rise to more success echoes the pride line of great African Queens and Kings she comes from.

A Deeper Mysterious Beauty

Something of a deeply good nature resonates within her that is just palpable enough to be perceived, and yet leaving a certain mystery one can not quite put their finger on.” – G. K. Holland

She has perhaps done more in the last decade than many to uplift a more ‘real world’ and believable physical image of everyday women. Her indelible mark of talent, business savvy and real world-ness makes her a ‘strong constant’ in the ever complex life equation for women and how they can relate to it in a healthy successful manner. It appears that she has connected in a meaningful and real way with women all over the world. Her beauty is undeniable, compelling and attractive on more than one level. Her appeal touches ones mind and spirit, which connects her to women of all ethnic backgrounds. Seen in the above photograph at one of many awards galas, Queen Latifah’s beauty is nothing short of radiant and calming, like an African sunset settling with a hypnotizing cool breeze over the Sahara desert where it kisses the Mediterranean sea. Something of a deeply good nature resonates within her that is just palpable enough to be perceived, and yet it leaves a certain mystery one can not quite put their finger on. Yet you know it is there, it is real, it is kind, it is nurturing, it warmly welcomes you and her talent delivers it right to you. In fact, she defies traditional beauty and that is always refreshing and courageous when it can be done in a classy fashion. Her new cosmetic line with Cover Girl says it all.

The Queen Collection

In an online interview, when asked about her business relationship with Cover Girl, she said: "I stand behind companies I believe in, and I get involved in projects where I know I can make a positive impact.” Her Cover Girl cosmetic line is called quite appropriately: “The Queen Collection”. She describes the cosmetic line something “…… to offer women of color, a fresh, natural and confident look with minimal effort!”

In a world and society where a slimmer woman is slim to the point of being unhealthy, the Queen brings us back to a reality that ‘all women need to be, and should be celebrated for their indelible right to be respected and recognized as beautiful. In some deep invisible way, she just seems to carry Mother Africa with her, and it embraces you with genuine warmth and care.

Somewhere along the way, somewhere in her journey if you happen to intersect some place in time that you might meet her, or where she might meet you (because after all, we are all special in God’s eyes), you can almost imagine Kool and the Gang singing their hit song ‘She’s Fresh’ ever so smoothly in the background, as Queen Latifah appears on the red carpet. Real people like Dana Owens (Queen Latifah) gives one an opportunity to enjoy their journey just that much more. To put it simply, to hear or see Queen Latifah’s talent is just quite simply a ‘good experience’.

A Queen of Star Walkers

In one of the beginning episodes of Star Walker, an Ethesian Ken Ju Kai named Trom Min travels from the other dimension to Mother Africa. There is his mission to protect and intercept Sandow 3 and several Dret warriors from stopping Star Walker Henry Dane (great great grandfather of 4th generation Star Walker & Ken Ju Kai Eric Dane) from discovering the Ken Ju Kai Medallion in Egypt. While on his mission he meets a beautiful Kenya woman named Lisha. The African meaning of Lisha is mysterious. She is a member of the legendary Ken Ju Kai Order on Earth.

You can reference Star Walker Radio Episode VI – Part 1 and experience Star Walker Sound for yourself. She is a fighter in the ongoing invisible war of principalities. Trom learns that he can not complete his mission without a key element. A key element only she holds. This key she has is profound, mysterious, powerful, yet simple. Queen Latifah reminds me of Lisha because she kind of sneaks up on you, like some great mystery. In between battling the bad guys in the shadows on the narrow streets of Cairo, between the Great Pyramids and the romancers of death, she finds her way, her greatness, her destiny as a Star walker Ken Ju Kai. Queen Latifah is like this character Lisha. Like Lisha she is still discovering not only her beauty but the mystery behind her greatness as well. This sort of thing  is always fun to watch, when the person is not fully aware of just how great they are.  and when they wear humbleness well.
