FROM ORPAH TO OPRAH

Born in a place called Kosciusko Mississippi on January 29th in 1954, Oprah Gail Winfrey would grow up from humble beginnings. When she was a young child she remembered watching her grandmother wash laundry out by hand and thinking instinctively that her life would be so much different. From that moment on she just knew her life would be very different from anyone in her family or most people for that matter.

True to Biblical proportions (her original name is the biblical name Orpah) the successes of her life would become rather legendary. But things did not begin for her in the easiest ways since her parents split up when she was still a toddler. Soon she was sent to her grandparents and raised by her grandmother until the age of six. It was not until she was sent to live with her mother that things became horrible for her.

She was sexually abused by relatives for years until the age of 14 when she went to live with her father. Her father was very strict, yet he cared for his daughter and wanted her to reach for high standards. "As strict as he was,…." says Oprah, "he had some concerns about me making the best of my life, and would not accept anything less than what he thought was my best." Oprah had been so abused that she was out of control during this time in her life, rebelling against authority and experimenting with drugs and other self-destructive behavior. Her academic skills paved the way for her being awarded a university scholarship. It was during this time she was able to grab and center herself with discipline towards academic greatness. She earned a B.A. in Speech Communications and Performing Arts at Tennessee State University, where she graduated with honors.

“I was born, as I said, in rural Mississippi in 1954. I was born at home. There were not a lot of educated people around and my name had been chosen from the Bible. My Aunt Ida had chosen the name, but nobody really knew how to spell it, so it went down as "Orpah" on my birth certificate, but people didn't know how to pronounce it, so they put the "P" before the "R" in every place else other than the birth certificate. On the birth certificate it is Orpah, but then it got translated to Oprah, so here we are. But that's great because Oprah spells Harpo backwards. I don't know what Orpah spells.” – Oprah Winfrey

SHE WAS ALWAYS A STAR WALKER

“It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph, begins with you. Always!”        -- Oprah Winfrey

“I was an orator for a long time. I've been an orator really, basically, all of my life. Since I was three and a half, I've been coming up in the church speaking. I did all of James Weldon Johnson's sermons. He has a series of seven sermons, beginning with "The Creation" and ending with "Judgment." I used to do them for churches all over the city of Nashville. I've spoken at every church in Nashville at some point in my life. You sort of get known for that. Other people were known for singing; I was known for talking. By the time I entered college, what I really wanted to do was be an actress, but I got hired in television, and so I was never able to make any of the play rehearsals. Story of my life.” – Oprah Winfrey

The story of star walker is all about one reaching their personal greatness through a recognition of the greater picture, one’s spiritual growth and path. It is about understanding and taking responsibility for one’s self and their place in this world. Her ongoing subscription to excellence has garnered her as one of the most influential people of the twentieth century, according to a Time Magazine feature article published in 2005. More importantly Star Walker is about making a difference in people’s lives through kindness and the kind of personal involvement that promotes life events towards the greater good. Oprah’s impressive body of work embraces this in some extraordinary ways.

LIVING THE LIFE OF A STAR WALKER

It’s been said before (in other Star Walker of the Month articles) but under the high excitement, adventure, awesome entertainment and inspirational elements of Star Walker runs a very serious but subtle message that addresses the human condition. The stories of Star walker deals with the human struggle, on a subtle yet deeper level it is also about ‘the family’. Much of Star walker is about allowing divine empowerment to guide and strengthen our lives, in spite of our short comings or stumbling as humans. As Oprah would say, Star Walker is about ‘Living Your Best Life!”  The philanthropic spirit as displayed in several of the Star Walker Radio Episode is yet another reason we chose Oprah Winfrey as our Star Walkers of the Month of March 2008.

OPRAH AWARDED AN HONORARY KEN JU KAI RANKING

In recognition of her ongoing success with her distinctive career of excellence in media, we present to her an honorary ranking of 6th Rank Ken Ju Kai. She has become and remains ‘the best of herself’.  In the past we have layed out a long prolific list of the many qualities of a Star Walker. However, this month we would like to use just two words to describe our sister Oprah Winfrey, “Constant Excellence”!
