Interview by Paul Sloan

The following interview is by Paul Sloan taken on May 5th, 2007. Radio DJ Randi Guess takes time to give us her insight on Star Walker as the navigational voice of the mysterious Ken Ju Kai Medallion (which is featured in each radio episode), and the other characters she has lent her incredible voice talent to in a number of Star Walker Radio Episodes. If you’ve had a chance to hear her prolific, stylish, smooth and even sometimes sultry voice, then you’ve experienced a real auditory treat. Read her revealing interview below:

Where did you grow up?

My father was In the Army, so I grew up in a lot of places.   I was a baby in Massachusetts and in Hawaii, a kid in Colorado Springs, Colorado, a t’ween in Gelnhausen, Germany and a teenager at Fort Polk in Louisiana.

How do you think your family life has affected your successful radio career?

My family has always influenced and encouraged me and continues to today.  In fact, we’re all peas in a pod!  Each of us, Mom, Dad, my sister and her daughter, and both my children at one point or another will launch into a character voice.  We have a ball!  …Now that I’m examining things…I think we’re weird!

What inspired you to want to get into radio?

I am…an enormous ham.  I love to make people laugh, and to create funny things.  I’m FULL of character voices, and I crave approval.  That’s a combo that screams radio!

Where and how did you begin your career in radio?

Picture it, TCBY Yogurt, 1988.  No, wait, picture me with MUCH bigger hair…bigger…biggerrrr…Perfect!   Now you’ve got it!  Ok, back to the topic:  My coworker’s Mother was married to the local popular dj, and as a result my friend was working a shift she didn’t want to work.  I, on the other hand, wanted the shift very badly indeed.  To her delight and mine, I got it.

In addition to public announcements and commercial spots you also disc jockey?

Oh yes.  I’m on the air from noon to 3 central time at KJLO, K104 in Monroe, Louisiana.  My listeners and me, we’re tight.

Has your radio career taken you to where you want to be?

So far so good!  I have aspirations yet, but am very pleased with my progress thus far.  I’m grateful that God saw fit to give me this career.  He knows exactly what I’m good for!

How did you find out about Star Walker?

I heard Jim Elliot was doing some voice-over work for a radio-theater-type production called Star Walker, and I was intrigued!  I made sure to slide by and remind everyone that if there were any parts for females available, “I know a girl”.  ME!

At what point were you aware that Star Walker was/is something very special?

After hearing the first full installation, it was hard to deny I had just heard something…unlike anything else I’d ever heard.  I’m honored to be a part of it.

Star Walker Radio Episodes consist of a vast array of characters, what character or characters have you portrayed thus far?

So far, I’ve been lucky enough to have been asked to read more than one character!   Of course, Shikira OT 2933 is my main character, but I’ve also gotten a chance to try on some other personalities…the friendly, compassionate “Dottie” in Episode 3, “Shadows and Echoes of Sandow 3” …and I was invited to get tough with stern MI-6 Supervisor Lillian Leland in Episode 6, “House of The Hallow – Part 2”.  I hear there will be even more opportunities and characters to try on very soon, such as the upcoming Episode VIII, a three parter, which I am to portray a very complex character called Wanda ‘The Wand’ Daehon, she’s a Korean woman with Black American influences.  She is a very different kind of character from the norm of Star Walker characters in that she is very comedic. I’m very excited!

Do you have a favorite character?

So far, I’d have to say Shikira OT.   I suppose it is because I’ve read her the most, and I feel I know her; I’m comfortable with her. Let me also explain though that Tatiana Del Toro was cast for the Web Series and movie versions of Star Walker, I just happen to do the voice for Shikira as she speaks through the Ken Ju Kai navigational device that you hear at the beginning of each radio episode. But Tatiana also plays Sarah Mihn who is Eric Dane’s girlfriend in Episode VI: House of the Hallow, Part 3. I know it’s a little confusing but were all doing multiple things in Star Walker! It’s awesome actually.

Where would you like to see your involvement with Star Walker eventually take you to?

Well…that’s a loaded question.  J  I just want everyone to hear the Star Walker message, soak it up, and let it sink in.  It’s not just an incredibly exciting drama-and action-filled, heart-pounding, mind-blowing radio-theater experience, you know…..there’s important stuff in there!

Earlier you mentioned that the character Wanda ‘The Wand’ Daehon is a comedic character who will appear in the Three-Part Episode VIII: In Search of the 4th Revelation, and that you will portray her.  Can you tell us about her?

Hard to do, as I’ve not yet met her…but I can’t wait.  I have pressed creator G.K. Holland for details, and managed to get him to share that she is witty, wild, and rather “street”…sounds like she’s going to be an awful lot of fun!

The first two Star Walker Radio Episodes Listening Events were held at the Woodland Hilton and the Universal Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles in 2006, with more cities being added for 2007, 2008 and beyond, do you plan on making some personal appearances as one of the characters at some of the future Star Walker Listening Events, or Mind Movies as they are sometimes called?

I’d love to!  I’d love to mainly to meet everyone who’s touched this project.  I’d like to see these friends face to face, and meet the minds who make this thing happen.  (I am a white-knuckle flier, though, so extra prayers will be requested at lift-off!)

Can you tell us what part or aspect of the Star Walker project is your personal favorite?

I LOVE radio theater.  Just watching …or rather, listening to the magic unfolding…it’s an incredible thing.  I love that whatever G.K. dreams up can be brought to life…no matter WHAT it is!

Is there anything you would like to reveal about any of the characters you’ve portrayed that few people know about yet?

Shikira OT 2933 has one eye, a peg leg, and a thick, red bear. Lol….. ………Ok, I made that up.

Will you be appearing in more of the Star Walker Radio Episodes?

If not, G.K. Holland will one day be pulling his California curtains aside to find a whiny disc jockey, pressing her face to the glass and complaining vigorously.  J

Where do you see yourself with Star Walker this same time next year?

Absolutely still deeply involved and hopefully still telling the tale as one or many characters.

Thank you so much for sharing your time and inside information on Star Walker. Would you like to leave us with any lasting words of wisdom?

Yes, I would say: “Never do anything that makes you feel less than you are!”
